Artificial Intelligence and Humanity: The Holy See Issues a Call for Caution
Today, January 28, 2025, the Holy See published the Antiqua et Nova note, a document that explores the ethical and moral implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in relation to human intelligence. The result of collaboration between the Dicasteries for the Doctrine of the Faith and for Culture and Education, the Note was approved by the Pope and is addressed to parents, educators, and those involved in the formation and transmission of faith.
While AI is recognized as a potential source of innovation, it nonetheless raises significant concerns. The document reiterates that "AI is not an artificial form of intelligence, but one of its products" and warns that it must be seen as a "complementary tool to human intelligence," never replacing interpersonal relationships. The Holy See calls for a reflection on the responsible use of technology, stating that "no machine should ever decide to take the life of a human being," as the Pope emphasized regarding the use of AI in military contexts.
"The analytical capabilities of AI could be used to help nations seek peace and security," but its potential application in autonomous weapons remains a "serious ethical concern," with the risk of "uncontrollable destructive power."
The document also sounds a warning against the abuse of personal data, reminding that "digital surveillance can be used to exert control over the lives of believers and the expression of their faith." Finally, it emphasizes that, in the educational field, AI risks "stifling" students' critical thinking abilities, encouraging immediate responses rather than the development of independent thought.
In conclusion, the Holy See calls for the use of technology that "does not harm humanity," reminding that while AI may offer opportunities, it can never replace the "richness of the human."
