Women’s Leadership in the Climate Movement: A Symposium Honoring Sr. Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN
The Pontifical Gregorian University invites all to attend a special symposium in honor of Sr. Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN (1931-2005), a pioneering figure in the global environmental and social justice movements. Sr. Dorothy, who dedicated her life to advocating for the rights of the poor and the preservation of the Amazon, will be remembered for her commitment to both faith and ecology.
The symposium, titled "Women’s Leadership in the Climate Movement", will feature a distinguished panel of experts and leaders who continue her legacy through their work in justice, peace, and environmental sustainability. The panelists will include:
- Sr. Mary Johnson, SNDdeN, Ph.D., Congregational Leader, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur
- Sr. Maamalifar Poreku, MSOLA, Co-Executive Secretary, Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation Commission, UISG/USG
- Dr. Emilce Cuda, Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America
- Dr. Gianni LaBella, Professor of Theology, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia; Community of Sant'Egidio
- Dr. Laurie Johnston, Professor of Theology, Emmanuel College; Community of Sant’Egidio
The event will be moderated by Fr. Prem Xalxo, SJ, Coordinator of the Joint Diploma in Integral Ecology, Pontifical Gregorian University.
The symposium will be followed by a Vespers service at 20:00, in collaboration with the Community of Sant’Egidio, at the Basilica of San Bartolomeo all’Isola. This poignant service will honor Sr. Dorothy Stang’s memory, culminating in the presentation of a relic of Sr. Dorothy for permanent installation in the Sanctuary of the New Martyrs. Sr. Dorothy will be the first woman from the United States to be honored in this way.
This event promises to be a powerful reflection on the intersection of faith, justice, and climate action, highlighting the vital role of women in the fight for a more sustainable and equitable world.
