Safeguarding Minors in the Catholic Church: A Renewed Commitment
The Conference on Safeguarding in the Catholic Church in Europe, an initiative of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors’ regional group for Europe, was held in Rome November 13-15, 2024. It brought together delegates from 25 European nations, representing bishops’ conferences, conferences of religious, academics, practitioners, advocates, and victims and survivors of clerical child sexual abuse.
Representing UISG, Sister Roxanne Schares, SSND participated in the conference and on the last day led the opening prayer with words of a victim-survivor, calling upon the Spirit for courage and renewed commitment to be bringers of justice and instruments of compassion and healing.
During the conference, participants emphasized the importance of the Church working collaboratively to eliminate all forms of abuse through institutional, communal, and personal conversion. Together they committed to enhance the protection and safety of all individuals within our communities – especially children and vulnerable adults.
