Sisters advocate: UISG co-hosts side event at UN High-Level Political Forum

On July 7th, at the UN’s High-Level Political Forum 2022, Catholic Sisters engaged in national and international advocacy showcased the power of partnerships to tackle some of the world’s most urgent ecological challenges.

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Holy See, HE Caroline Weijers, and the Chair of the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, Houry Geudelekian, joined Sisters in Rome, New York, Nigeria and the Philippines for a webinar entitled Leadership for Change: A Call to Action from Sisters Supporting Vulnerable Communities.

Co-hosted by UISG and UNANIMA International, with support from the Global Solidarity Fund, this event brought to Member States the distinctive voices of Catholic Sisters with a strong call to action on Sustainable Development Goals 14, 15 and 17 – Life below water, Life on land, and Partnerships for the Goals.

Sister Sheila Kinsey, Coordinator of UISG’s ecological initiative Sowing Hope the Planet, said: “We do advocacy inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth who continues to guide and inform us on our journey to transform the world. In the spirit of synodality and solidarity, we are interconnecting grassroots concerns with national and international levels. This work requires cooperation and coordination to be fully effective.

Our process includes the integration of our values as foundational for developing principles to create social change in our institutions, governments and organisations. With this intentional, systemic approach we are pursuing a critical tipping point for change, to develop a harmonious and safe way of life for all people and for our common home.
