Sr. Mary Barron appointed to the Dicastery for Evangelization

On June 8th 2024, Pope Francis announced new appointments to the Dicastery for Evangelization. Among them is Sr. Mary Barron, OLA, UISG President, nominated as a member of a Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches.

Born in Ireland, Sr. Mary is the Congregational Leader of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles, a missionary congregation founded in Lyon, France, in 1876 for evangelization, particularly in Africa.
Sr Mary gained missionary experience in Nigeria, West Africa during formation and subsequently as a professed Sister in Tanzania in East Africa.

“I was surprised but delighted to be nominated as a Member of the Dicastery for Evangelization, Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches.” – says sr. Mary. “I hold it as a great honour both for the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) and for my own congregation, the sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA). In my capacity as a Board member of UISG, I have been serving as a member of the Council of 18 for the past few years, a consultative body between the two unions for religious life: UISG and the Union of Superiors General (USG), and the Dicastery.
This new nomination inspires a deep sense of gratitude in me, as it recognizes female missionaries and the contributions, we make to the Missio Dei.”

She adds: “This appointment is particularly significant for my congregation at this time, as we are beginning to plan the celebrations of 150 years since our foundation (1876-2026), a foundation that was closely linked to Propaganda Fide at that time. In the light of growing into a more synodal expression of Church, it is also an important acknowledgment of the centrality of women to an authentic expression of Church in our time.”
