Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Conclude Centenary Year with Gratitude and Hope
On March 7, 2025, the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary (MSHR) celebrated the successful conclusion of their centenary year—an immense period of reflection, gratitude, and joyful celebration. Marking the end of a year dedicated to honouring 100 years of missionary work, the event took place on the eve of International Women’s Day and highlighted the profound impact the MSHR has made in empowering women and spreading God’s love worldwide.
The year-long celebrations began in March 2024 and were anchored in a special dedication to the congregation's founder, Bishop Joseph Shanahan CSSp, and the pioneering sisters who have carried his mission onward. Through their untiring commitment, they transformed lives in numerous countries across the globe.
Sr. Franca Onyibor, MSHR’s Congregational Leader, expressed immense gratitude for the support from benefactors, donors, and funders, which have enabled the Congregation to extend its missionary work in the 13 countries where they serve. From its humble beginnings in Nigeria in 1924, the congregation has grown to include missions in eight other African countries, as well as in Ireland, the UK, the USA, and Brazil.
Throughout the centenary year, the MSHR engaged in various outreach initiatives, such as tree planting and providing scholarships for refugees, displaced persons, and children with disabilities. These projects reflected the Sisters' continuing service to responding to the pressing needs of marginalized communities around the world.
The Congregation’s 16th General Chapter, held from July 7 to 28, 2024, was a key moment in the centenary celebrations. This important gathering allowed the sisters to engage in deep discernment and forward-looking planning, renewing their commitment to God's mission and reaffirming their dedication to the needs of both the planet and the poor. It was a powerful reminder of the MSHR’s ongoing vision as they look to the future with renewed hope.
As they conclude this centennial chapter, the MSHR also took a moment to remember those sisters who have passed away over the years, expressing heartfelt prayers for their eternal rest.
Looking ahead, the Holy Rosary Sisters are stepping into the next century with hope and a new vision. They have renewed their mission to empowering women, care for the earth, and uplift the marginalized, trusting that God will continue to guide their path.
As part of the concluding events for their centenary year, the MSHR is hosting a closing celebration on April 26, 2025, at 3 p.m. Irish time via Zoom. The MSHR invites all to join in this historic event, which will commemorate the Congregation’s profound legacy and its commitment to God's mission.
The Zoom link will be provided closer to the date, and the Congregation looks forward to welcoming all those who have supported them throughout the years.
